Martin Luther: Vom unfreien Willen und der Freiheit eines Christenmenschen Atem und Verantwortlichkeit in Luthers Denken

Luther explains in his treatise "De servo arbitrio" that free will (liberumarbitrium), although given to man in a state of nature, does not suffice for the attainment of grace. In this treatise (notably in its exegesis of the Gospel according to John) logical and exegetical categories merge so that Luther attains an irrefutable position in the context of the intellectual possibilities of his time. Since only faith in the grace offered through Christ corresponds to God's acts of salvation, the path is paradoxically opened to the modern era's philosophy of freedom.
