Melanchthons Wendung zur Trinitätslehre

At first glance it seems as if, in his Loci of 1521, Melanchton categorically refused to deal with the doctrine of the Trinity, because the Trinity is a mystery. Accordingly, including this doctrine in the Loci in 1533 would have represented a break with his previous position. However, his theological approach has its roots in the doctrine of the Trinity. æMysteryÆ is something that can only be unlocked by receiving the beneficia Christi. The structure of prayer reflects the Holy Trinity. Man praying for his justification turns to the Triune God. Thus the doctrine of justification and the doctrine of the Trinity are inseparable. Therefore Melanchton had to turn against ServetÆs doctrine of the Trinity.
