Emma Woodhouse, handsome, clever, and rich, with a comfortable home and happy disposition, seemed to unite some of the best blessings of existence; and had lived nearly twenty-one years in the world with very little to distress or vex her. Emma lives a sheltered existence in Highbury, with a doting father and their lifelong friend Mr Knightley. Having no need of matrimony herself, Emma turns her attention to the romantic prospects of others. Her love for matchmaking at first shows real promise, despite Knightley's warnings, but it may prove to be more perilous than she anticipates, and risk the one heart she supposed she was keeping safe: her own.
