This contribution scrutinizes the traditional, ethically charged alternative of altruism and egoism. It presupposes to view altruism and selfishness as a continuum of possible behavior that can be balanced in different ways according to the individual logic of their ranges of action. The systematic-theological starting point of this approach is Martin Luther's distinction between the actions of Christians as private persons or as officials. This distinction proves highly relevant under the conditions of functionally diverse societies.
