The difference between various Bible translations is widely explained by the so-called bipolar translation model, according to which a translation moves along a spectrum between the two poles of closeness to the original text and comprehensibility. This article shows that this model is in need of differentiation. Following Luther's epistle on interpretation, it first profiles aesthetics as a further pole of the translation model and then develops the factual reference of understanding as an inescapable pre-understanding of all Bible translation. Finally, against the background of these explanations, the use of Bible translations in the church is critically reflected.
